Have you ever felt jittery when it has been a while since you ate, or seen a child be hyperactive when hungry or after eating sugar? Ever noticed that you feel tired after eating a large meal like at Thanksgiving? These are just simple examples of how food affects our mood. That saying “you are what you eat” is literal – everything we put in our mouths feeds the cells in our body, including our brains.

There are many ways to improve your body health, and it is best to address all of them, not just one. Listed below are many suggestions to improve overall health. Taking one suggestion may help your brain function; following all will help a great deal.

  • Eat a source of protein at every meal or snack. It balances with the carbs to stop the sugar high.
  • Reduce or eliminate:
    Sugar compromises the body’s immune system
    Potatoes and white flour turn into sugar in the body
  • No Trans Fats! Found in fries, chips, cookies, and shortening. Trans fats replace good fat in the brain with slow bad fats.
  • Add Omega 3 oils – Fish Oil is best. Very good for the brain, and heart, too! Find it in the health food section, the health food store, or on-line.
  • Try a high quality multi-vitamin, that includes each B vitamin. The B vitamins are used for many of the chemical reactions produced in the brain for creation of neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, stress decreases their absorption from diet, so supplementation is necessary for many people. Especially useful for those with sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and fatigue.
  • Exercise every day.
  • Eliminate foods that may be causing problems. Many people are allergic or sensitive to gluten (including wheat and oats) and dairy. These can cause learning and behavior problems. Consider an elimination diet to find the foods that may be causing problems.
