Once the base of the Pyramid is complete, academic success is easier to come by. There may still be areas that need help, but the effort is far reduced. For example, spelling is difficult for many children with learning struggles, but after they can see, hear, and remember, spelling comes more naturally. However, depending on how many years of spelling was missed to these struggles, there may be a period of time before that skill is caught up. Once a child has the auditory and visual skills necessary to read, she only needs to learn the knowledge of how words are built and how to “break the code”. The goal of tutoring, which is to catch the student up to his peers, is obtainable. How do I know this works? I was there. I was a tutor who just wanted her bright young students to succeed. It hurt me so much to hear some students would say they were stupid, and that they hated themselves. It took years to finding therapies and trainings, and research to find the best programs.
